Is Wearing Make Up to the Gym harmful?
It has happened to most of us – we are wearing make-up to the gym when we go right after school, work, or a meeting with friends and the last thing we think about before starting our intense sweat session is taking off our make-up.
Even if we are going straight to the gym – some of us don’t mind the extra confidence that a little mascara can give.
Is Wearing Make Up to the Gym harmful?
Of course, it is probably best to avoid make-up altogether, but let’s be real – that’s not very likely to happen any time soon.
What differentiates wearing make-up during a workout from wearing it during the rest of the day is that due to the rising of your body temperature and sweating, your pores open up, making it easier for make-up particles to block them and cause blemishes.
Unfortunately, that’s not the only threat to your skin that allures at the gym.
Every surface there is in constant contact with sweat and dirt, creating the perfect conditions for the acne-causing bacteria to thrive.

To minimize the risk of all that going on your skin, simply avoid touching your face as much as possible.
Use a towel to put underneath you and be mindful of which side of it you put down so that you don’t bring it back to your face.
With all that being said, I am fully aware that most of us will continue taking risks and wearing make-up to the gym.
In my own experience, a few products never hurt me.
I like to keep it minimal though, sometimes it’s just a swipe of mascara and some lip balm on.
If I am feeling extra fancy, I might add some concealer underneath the eyes and around the nose (covering that redness around it), and some brow gel to keep them in place.
For me, that’s more than enough, and usually, by the end of my workout, the only thing that has survived on my face is my mascara.

Here are some basic guidelines to follow when wearing make-up to the gym:
1. Skip the foundation
Use a matte finish concealer to spot correct blemishes or dark circles.
Luminosity or glow is not something to go for at the gym since you’re going to sweat-shine anyway.
2. Avoid anything greasy
Products that are too hydrating or oil-based will only make you shine like a disco ball, and that isn’t a cute look on anyone.

3. Avoid bright colors
Basically, avoid anything that might smear down your skin and leave some artsy-looking shapes on your face.
4. Use a lip balm
No lipstick for the same reasons mentioned before – you don’t want it smeared everywhere. You’ll be better off with a lip balm that gives you just a touch of shine and color.

5. Use waterproof mascara
Unless you like the panda look on yourself, you might want to get one of those. There are plenty of really good drugstore options as well.
My all-time favorite is the Maybelline Volume Express The Rocket Waterproof Mascara – it applies evenly, lasts very long, doesn’t smudge, and causes no clumping – what more can you want?
